How to fix your clogged garbage disposal

Quick fixes like this can often get your garbage disposal running again without calling a plumber.

In this short video, we cover two simple steps to troubleshoot a stuck disposal. A humming sound usually means the blades are jammed and can be freed manually from underneath the sink. If there’s no sound at all, pressing the reset button may restore power and get things working again.

  • When a garbage disposal stops working, it can be frustrating, but the issue is often easy to fix with a few simple checks. In many cases, a disposal that seems broken is either jammed or needs to be reset, both of which can be handled without professional help.

If you turn on your garbage disposal and hear a low humming sound, this usually means the unit is receiving power but the internal blades are stuck. This is a common issue caused by food debris or other objects preventing the blades from spinning freely. To fix this, an Allen key can be used to manually rotate the blades. On the bottom center of the garbage disposal, there is a small socket designed specifically for this purpose. By inserting the Allen key and slowly turning it in either direction, you can help loosen the jam. It may take a few turns back and forth, but once the blades begin to move freely, the blockage is typically cleared. After this, the disposal can be turned back on and should operate normally.

On the other hand, if the garbage disposal makes no sound at all when switched on, the problem may be related to power rather than a mechanical jam. Most garbage disposals are equipped with a built-in reset button located on the bottom of the unit. Pressing this button can restore power if the disposal has shut off as a safety measure. Once reset, the unit can be tested again to see if it resumes normal operation.

By understanding these two common issues—jams and power interruptions—homeowners can often resolve garbage disposal problems quickly and safely. Taking a few moments to check these simple solutions can save time, reduce stress, and prevent unnecessary repair costs.
